I was back at L’Auberge Del Mar tonight for a great wedding. I projected the couple’s names onto the waterfall for a dramatic outdoor space. Guests kept taking pictures with it so it served a few different purposes. We packed the ballroom with 150 guests, a band, and myself as the DJ. We kicked dancing off 10 minutes into the reception before dinner was served. They had many guests from the east coast so they are used to a little dancing before dinner. It worked out well and the floor was packed. I mostly played Motown and Oldies at this point to keep it friendly for all. After dinner the band played for an hour, we cut the cake, and then I finished off the evening playing more of the current music mixed in with a little funk, 80’s, and 90’s. They kept wanting more. The groom wanted “Shout” as the last song and everyone went completely nuts.

MOCA Wedding CakeThe Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla is always one of my favorite places to work at mainly because it is an interesting space and I have always been into modern art (not to mention the lighting possibilities!) We had the ceremony outside on the patio with my favorite Minister Jerry Bryant this evening. Cocktail hour was held downstairs in the Coast Room. Guests then moved upstairs for the reception where Guiseppe Catering was busy with three excellent food stations. It was perfect timing because it was just getting dark and all the uplighting that I had done in the room was beginning to come to life. Look at the before and after pictures below to really get a great idea of what lighting can do for any reception space! They had a cool lounge area back by the artwork that Haydee from Concepts Event Design provided. John from Aquario Studio Photography documented the evening on film. I am interested to get some of his photos of the lighting in the room since my small camera doesn’t really do these photos justice. Organic Elements did some minimal floral centerpieces that fit well in the modern space. We kicked off dancing with a slightly older music set to make sure all of the family members and family friends were happy. Once we cut the cake a little later we kicked things into high gear. I played more current music and mostly club remixes for the rest of the night. They seemed conservative early on in the evening but got pretty wild the last hour. Excellent well rounded wedding.

It was a long drive but well worth the effort once I arrived. The wedding was at a private estate tonight with the reception held in an enormous 250 person clear tent out on a large grassy area just beyond the pool. There were many unique and personal touches to this wedding. To start with the gifts were all dropped off in a wooden sailboat leaning on it’s side next to the guest book. The ceremony was on a large grassy hill under a huge tree which looked amazing as the backdrop. Cocktail hour was held out by the pool with one of my favorite items… a full sushi bar. The tables looked amazing in the large clear tent with five hanging chandeliers. The black and white checkered dance floor added a fun element. The candy bar had older vintage style candy to go along with their theme. The food was amazing (a four course meal as you can see by the silverware on the tables). Dinner took over two hours so it was a bit long but guests did not walk away hungry. Later on in the evening milk and cookies were brought out as a surprise for the groom (his favorite). Dancing went really well despite dinner taking up so much time. They were ready to have some fun. It tapered off towards the end but I think that was because guests had to drive a long way home. A very impressive wedding to say the least.

Tonight’s wedding was over at the Coronado Community Center. A few great things about this location are the fact that you are right on the water, there is a nice outside patio for cocktail hour, the reception room is modern yet warm, and the entire location is fairly new. It seemed that is was a very reserved group during the entrance (very little clapping or noise) and dinner hour so I thought it would turn out to be a mellow evening. Once dancing kicked into full gear they were out there having a great time! It is always a nice surprise. A few unique personal touches: They had someone hand paint all of the table numbers with orchids and flowers which looked amazing, there was a frozen dessert bar with all sorts of unknown cold treats, and three close friends got together and played their first dance live. The cake spotlighting and uplighting I provided looked amazing tonight! The cake provided some of the best photos I have been able to capture. I can’t wait to see the professional photos their photographer Jared Bauman took. He had a slideshow going with some beautiful shots. Melanie Montoya from Something Blue Weddings helped coordinate the evening without any glitches.

Another amazing group tonight! You know you are at a great place when you pull up to the Grande Colonial in La Jolla and there are two Ferrari’s and a Lamborghini sitting out front. It was a smaller group of about 80 people. The Grande Colonial is an excellent place for this size of group because they have different areas to create interest. Cocktail hour and dinner were held outside on the balcony and patio area. Dancing moved inside later on. The bride and groom were very specific with their music requests. It was probably some of the most unique and unusual music I have ever played at a wedding. I wasn’t too sure how all of this music would play out at the event since many of the artists and songs were most likely unfamiliar to their guests (Sound Tribe Sector 9, Pnuma Trio, Nosaj Thing, etc.). I was pleasantly surprised because it really worked well for their group. Everyone had an open mind and enjoyed it (they didn’t have to hear the ultra cliche’ songs in order to dance which is normally difficult for Americans). Highlights included: refreshing/unique music with an electronic twist, I spotlighted the cake which really made it stand out once the sun went down (see photo above), the water effect lighting added some movement and color to the dance floor area, the bride had on a pair of excellent Christian Louboutin heels that the photographer Cary Pennington kept trying to sneak shots of, the coordinators from Red Letter Days helped keep the evening (and guests) on track! Excellent wedding!

It is always a true honor when someone in the wedding industry selects me to DJ their wedding because they view DJ’s every week and definitely know “the good, the bad, and the ugly”. The bride works as the Director Of Catering over at the Lodge At Torrey Pines which is one of the nicest locations in San Diego so she could have selected anybody. I had DJ’d her sister’s wedding a year ago out at the Coronado Marriott (one of the best dancing groups I have had in years) so it was sort of a referral from that event as well since she had a blast! The wedding tonight was at the El Cortez Don Room which has a unique shape and a wonderful patio space. Overall an excellent location for a celebration (A great fact: since 1927 everyone from Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, William Jefferson Clinton have all partied in the 24k Don Room). The main focus tonight was on the food! It was a four course meal that took three hours to serve :(. This left only about 45 minutes for dancing. They tore it up for about a good half hour and then guess what… more food! They opened up a “street taco” bar out on the patio with cigars and ports near the cool modern lounge furniture/fireplace. Everyone had a good time and left completely full!
It was great to work with Kathy Wright & Co. Event Design & Florals and Tim Otto Photography again.
Lighting: Uplights, Centerpiece Spotlights, Monogram Projection
An excellent example of the effect that spotlighting the centerpieces and lighting in general can create. I really think that lighting is one of the most important decorating elements that often is overlooked.

The KNOT.com hosted an invite only vendor party tonight at the Inn At Rancho Santa Fe. They gave a 30 minute presentation on local, as well as, national wedding trends and statistics. Pretty amazing information that they can gather through their website and surveys. The rest of the evening was spent around the pool socializing and networking with other wedding vendors. Unique and tasty food was provided by Chile Co. Catering.

Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa La Jolla Ballroom is one of the best locations to have a wedding. A very fun and unique moment was the Lion Dance to kick off the evening (see photo below). The reception was on a Sunday night 7pm until 12 midnight so I wasn’t sure how guests would react to dancing since it was pretty late. They were an amazing group and you would have never known it wasn’t a crazy Saturday evening. They danced all night until the very end. The uplights matched perfectly with the room decor in an amber color and added just a bit of warmth to the walls and photos. Botanica always provides a clean and contemporary look to the centerpieces and florals. It was great to once again work with Theorie Photography and EverAfter Events Coordinators.

The El Cortez is a unique round shaped room with a wood carved ceiling. The cake spotlighting truly helps the cake stand out in a great way. Uplights look beautiful on the outdoor tent during cocktail hour. Fun groom’s cake that looked exactly like a box of cigars. This wedding was a referral from their photographers at Theorie. Another great dancing group!
