Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and this weekend’s wedding was at the Grand Tradition Estate in Fallbrook. They have two locations at this site: the outdoor covered Arbor Terrace and the Beverly Mansion. Grand Tradition takes care of the music and microphones for the ceremony so I was inside the mansion tonight providing the reception DJ entertainment. This wedding was originally scheduled for late May but the groom received new orders that he was going to have to head over to Iraq early so they bumped the wedding up to February. Everyone was in a great mood and looking forward to the celebration despite these new orders. The ceremony was held outside by the lake. Guests moved into the mansion for the reception. I always think centerpieces that incorporate branches and candles that give the table some height look great. They went well with the room. The reception and events went extremely well.  One nice element was a special dedication to the bride’s parents. As a surprise I played their first dance song since they were celebrating their 30th anniversary. The cake looked tasty and I heard a few people commenting on how they could actually smell the chocolate from a distance. Dancing was consistent the entire evening and picked up as the evening went on. We ending with their last dance: Let’s Get It On – Marvin Gaye  which always creates a little laughter…

I was over at the Town & Country Resort for a Sunday wedding today. I provided sound for the outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour. We then moved inside the ballroom for the reception. It was funny because they also had an ice sculpture which you don’t see at every wedding (last night’s wedding had an ice sculpture martini luge). I added some colored lighting to the ice sculpture which really made it stand out from across the room. Dancing was fairly consistent throughout the evening considering it was a Sunday night wedding. The lighting looked amazing in the room and really enhanced the atmosphere. It can really hide certain elements and bring out items you want to highlight. Tonight was a perfect example of that. I provided a custom monogram that was projected down onto the dance floor and 7 uplights around the room.

The Marriott Downtown San Diego was the venue for tonight’s wedding. The Seaview Room is a unique room with many options for lighting! Tonight we had many uplights throughout the space. Three custom monogram projections were projected onto the walls. We had their names above the dance floor and then two other patterned images on the side walls to add some interest. Dancing went well for the entire evening and guests had a good time. We used the water effect lighting above the dance floor during open dancing for color and movement. A fun element was the ice martini luge where guests could select their custom flavored martini before it was chilled going down the ice luge. They also had a chocolate fountain with an assortment of fruits, brownies, rice krispies, and snacks to dip.

The Menu tonight looked amazing:

Parmesan Mushroom Risotto

Basket of Baked Breads to Include Mini Cheese Rolls and Cheese Sticks

I was back at L’Auberge Del Mar tonight for a great wedding. I projected the couple’s names onto the waterfall for a dramatic outdoor space. Guests kept taking pictures with it so it served a few different purposes. We packed the ballroom with 150 guests, a band, and myself as the DJ. We kicked dancing off 10 minutes into the reception before dinner was served. They had many guests from the east coast so they are used to a little dancing before dinner. It worked out well and the floor was packed. I mostly played Motown and Oldies at this point to keep it friendly for all. After dinner the band played for an hour, we cut the cake, and then I finished off the evening playing more of the current music mixed in with a little funk, 80’s, and 90’s. They kept wanting more. The groom wanted “Shout” as the last song and everyone went completely nuts.

Tonight I was up at the California Center For The Arts in Escondido. In the past 15 years I can’t remember DJing a wedding or event there. It is always refreshing to visit a new location. We started with cocktail hour outside on the patio where I provided a small cocktail portable music system. It was hot out so guests were ready to make there way inside once we opened up the ballroom doors. The cocktail hour and reception were a total of 7 hours on a Sunday night so I didn’t think guests would make it until the end.It did fade out around 10pm but people stayed until the end. I played a lot of country tonight (bride & groom’s requests) which is very different from most weddings. They enjoyed it and I think everyone had a good time. The uplighting I provided really put some needed color on the all white walls. The space would have felt really empty without them. We also use the white “starry” lights during their first dance only. They wanted to add a little something different to make it stand out.

Tonight was a VIP only event at Arterra outdoor lounge at the Marriott Del Mar. I provided a “lighting only” job to enhance the space. All of the Marriott Hotels got together to throw an “end of the summer party” for the upper management, as well as, each hotels biggest clients. Arterra outdoor lounge is one of my favorite outdoor locations. Modern, clean, unlimited possibilities (not to mention some of the highest rated food in San Diego). I provided uplighting for all of the palm trees, rippling water effect lighting on the building, white “starry lights all over the space, along with 2 custom gobo projections with the “Arterra” logo on the wood lounge area and the “Marriott” logo down into the pool. It was a complete hit with the VIP guests. Throughout the night I noticed people pointing to certain lighting elements and talking about the atmosphere. I joined in on a few conversations and think I might have another lighting job or two from this event. If you are looking to host an event at an amazing outdoor venue call and ask for Stephanie. You will be well taken care of…

MOCA Wedding CakeThe Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla is always one of my favorite places to work at mainly because it is an interesting space and I have always been into modern art (not to mention the lighting possibilities!) We had the ceremony outside on the patio with my favorite Minister Jerry Bryant this evening. Cocktail hour was held downstairs in the Coast Room. Guests then moved upstairs for the reception where Guiseppe Catering was busy with three excellent food stations. It was perfect timing because it was just getting dark and all the uplighting that I had done in the room was beginning to come to life. Look at the before and after pictures below to really get a great idea of what lighting can do for any reception space! They had a cool lounge area back by the artwork that Haydee from Concepts Event Design provided. John from Aquario Studio Photography documented the evening on film. I am interested to get some of his photos of the lighting in the room since my small camera doesn’t really do these photos justice. Organic Elements did some minimal floral centerpieces that fit well in the modern space. We kicked off dancing with a slightly older music set to make sure all of the family members and family friends were happy. Once we cut the cake a little later we kicked things into high gear. I played more current music and mostly club remixes for the rest of the night. They seemed conservative early on in the evening but got pretty wild the last hour. Excellent well rounded wedding.

Extras Provided: 19 custom colored uplights, slide show projection equipment

Perfect weather today out at Marina Village for a ceremony & reception. The ceremony was held out on the North Lawn with a great view of the boats and docks. After the ceremony guests moved into the Captain’s room for the reception. Cocktail hour was a blast as guests were able to go out on a large boat for a quick spin around the bay. We kicked things off with their first dance and the wedding party got into the act. They were dong the “wave” to certain moments in the song. It was great and added some fun to their dance. The rest of the evening went really well. Guests danced to a large variety of music. The 10 uplights in the room put some color on the all white walls.

This weekend I was out at the Inn At Rancho Santa Fe. This wedding required tons of work on my part due to four separate locations needing sound. I had to have multiple systems to cover the ceremony on the grass, cocktail hour by the pool, dinner/toasts/important dances outside in the garden, and dancing inside the Azalea Room. A nice unique touch (that I have not seen before) was out at the ceremony they laid out a huge path of actual lavender (instead of using a white runner) and then the flower girl threw the flowers on top of it as she walked down. They continued with this theme naming all of the tables various spices and herbs. Inside the room they had a great looking chocolate cake with more lavender spread all around the base of the cake stand. It really made the room smell great! I used the white “starry” lights to add a little movement up on the ceiling and create some interest in the room for dancing. Tonight I had a great team of vendors with me as Kevin Roche was taking care of the photography and Mia from Red Letter Days helped coordinate the event. I was just at the Coronado Community Center last week and now I am back again for another wedding! The ceremony was held outside on the grass and looked amazing. It was set in a circle with the bride and groom in the center. Guests had a great view from all angles. The reception looked great. I added 8 colored uplights and the white starry lights on the ceiling to create the look they were going for. Lighting can really help out any room! Instead of a cake tonight they had about 10 different flavors of cheesecake beautifully displayed on top of glass vases filled with fruit and flowers. Dancing went pretty well tonight. It was great to see a couple who I DJ’d for 5 years ago (at their wedding). Everyone enjoyed the night.
