I was over at the Town & Country Resort for a Sunday wedding today. I provided sound for the outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour. We then moved inside the ballroom for the reception. It was funny because they also had an ice sculpture which you don’t see at every wedding (last night’s wedding had an ice sculpture martini luge). I added some colored lighting to the ice sculpture which really made it stand out from across the room. Dancing was fairly consistent throughout the evening considering it was a Sunday night wedding. The lighting looked amazing in the room and really enhanced the atmosphere. It can really hide certain elements and bring out items you want to highlight. Tonight was a perfect example of that. I provided a custom monogram that was projected down onto the dance floor and 7 uplights around the room.

The Marriott Downtown San Diego was the venue for tonight’s wedding. The Seaview Room is a unique room with many options for lighting! Tonight we had many uplights throughout the space. Three custom monogram projections were projected onto the walls. We had their names above the dance floor and then two other patterned images on the side walls to add some interest. Dancing went well for the entire evening and guests had a good time. We used the water effect lighting above the dance floor during open dancing for color and movement. A fun element was the ice martini luge where guests could select their custom flavored martini before it was chilled going down the ice luge. They also had a chocolate fountain with an assortment of fruits, brownies, rice krispies, and snacks to dip.

The Menu tonight looked amazing:

Parmesan Mushroom Risotto
Patty Pan Squash, Asparagus, Baby Carrots, and Roasted Red Tomato with Bread Crumbs
Basket of Baked Breads to Include Mini Cheese Rolls and Cheese Sticks
~Dessert~

I was back at L’Auberge Del Mar tonight for a great wedding. I projected the couple’s names onto the waterfall for a dramatic outdoor space. Guests kept taking pictures with it so it served a few different purposes. We packed the ballroom with 150 guests, a band, and myself as the DJ. We kicked dancing off 10 minutes into the reception before dinner was served. They had many guests from the east coast so they are used to a little dancing before dinner. It worked out well and the floor was packed. I mostly played Motown and Oldies at this point to keep it friendly for all. After dinner the band played for an hour, we cut the cake, and then I finished off the evening playing more of the current music mixed in with a little funk, 80’s, and 90’s. They kept wanting more. The groom wanted “Shout” as the last song and everyone went completely nuts.

Tonight was a VIP only event at Arterra outdoor lounge at the Marriott Del Mar. I provided a “lighting only” job to enhance the space. All of the Marriott Hotels got together to throw an “end of the summer party” for the upper management, as well as, each hotels biggest clients. Arterra outdoor lounge is one of my favorite outdoor locations. Modern, clean, unlimited possibilities (not to mention some of the highest rated food in San Diego). I provided uplighting for all of the palm trees, rippling water effect lighting on the building, white “starry lights all over the space, along with 2 custom gobo projections with the “Arterra” logo on the wood lounge area and the “Marriott” logo down into the pool. It was a complete hit with the VIP guests. Throughout the night I noticed people pointing to certain lighting elements and talking about the atmosphere. I joined in on a few conversations and think I might have another lighting job or two from this event. If you are looking to host an event at an amazing outdoor venue call and ask for Stephanie. You will be well taken care of…

This week I was over at L’Auberge Del Mar for a wonderful wedding. Dinner was held upstairs out on the deck overlooking the ocean and dancing moved downstairs into the ballroom where we created a club style atmosphere. The bride is a concert pianist so music was very important to this couple. Their entire theme was based around music. The unique wedding cake was a piano, their custom monogram that was projected onto the waterfall outside and onto the dance floor inside was made up to look like a heart from music notes. Kathy Wright & Co. brought in the florals, cool white lounge furniture, a white dance floor, and amazing wooden grid walls that were used to create lounge spaces withing the room. The coordinators from EverAfter Events took care of many of the important details and helped create a flawless event.

You can see the difference the lighting makes in setting the mood and creating interest in the room. The first photo is without any lighting with the lights set at a dinner level, the second photo is with the lighting on with the general lights still set at a dinner level, the third photo is what happens when we dim the lights to really get the atmosphere we want to create. The difference is pretty amazing…

Check out the flowers, chandelier, and canopy on that sweetheart table! It was a long drive but well worth it! Tonight I was up at the Hilton Waterfront in Huntington Beach for an amazing wedding. As you can see there were more flowers on their sweetheart table than at most weddings! The room looked amazing with the large centerpieces, the cool white lounge furniture, and the lighting that pulled it all together. We used 24 uplights, cake spotlighting, and a monogram on the dance floor to create the overall effect. One of the best looking weddings I have been to… Amazing candy bar topped it all off. The crowd was a fun dancing group and the evening went off without a hitch thanks to the help of Laura and Joanna from Unforgettable Event Coordinators.

I was back at the Rancho Bernardo Inn tonight in the Aragon Ballroom. The ceremony was directly outside on the lawn. One of the most unique things I have ever seen at a wedding happened tonight. The bride had this surprise planned for the groom but didn’t tell anyone. She got on the microphone and explained how her new husband basically devotes his entire life to serving others and she wanted to do something special for him. She took him out to the middle of the dance floor before dinner and had him sit down. The staff brought out a metal tub with towels. She then washed his feet as a way of honoring him. It was a silent and touching moment for all (see picture below). It was a conservative and fairly mellow group tonight (which the bride and groom expected) yet they still enjoyed the evening with some dancing. The enormous chocolate fountain (with milk to wash it all down) was a hit! I provided a few different lighting options tonight which really enhanced the atmosphere of the room. The bride and groom explained to me that the wall where their sweetheart table was placed looked really blank and not very attractive so I suggested we project their monogram up above their table along with uplighting throughout the room. You can see the before and after pictures below.

It is always a true honor when someone in the wedding industry selects me to DJ their wedding because they view DJ’s every week and definitely know “the good, the bad, and the ugly”. The bride works as the Director Of Catering over at the Lodge At Torrey Pines which is one of the nicest locations in San Diego so she could have selected anybody. I had DJ’d her sister’s wedding a year ago out at the Coronado Marriott (one of the best dancing groups I have had in years) so it was sort of a referral from that event as well since she had a blast! The wedding tonight was at the El Cortez Don Room which has a unique shape and a wonderful patio space. Overall an excellent location for a celebration (A great fact: since 1927 everyone from Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, William Jefferson Clinton have all partied in the 24k Don Room). The main focus tonight was on the food! It was a four course meal that took three hours to serve :(. This left only about 45 minutes for dancing. They tore it up for about a good half hour and then guess what… more food! They opened up a “street taco” bar out on the patio with cigars and ports near the cool modern lounge furniture/fireplace. Everyone had a good time and left completely full!
It was great to work with Kathy Wright & Co. Event Design & Florals and Tim Otto Photography again.
Lighting: Uplights, Centerpiece Spotlights, Monogram Projection
An excellent example of the effect that spotlighting the centerpieces and lighting in general can create. I really think that lighting is one of the most important decorating elements that often is overlooked.

A classy masquerade ball themed wedding with an amazing crowd at the Westgate Hotel downtown. Highlights included the masks that were given to each guest, the unique cake, as well as, the cake being cut with a sword. The uplighting really added to the room and their monogram projected on the dance floor added a personal touch.
