I always love The Dana Hotel because it is a modern space. It usually attracts a pretty cool crowd. The groom actually produces music and beats for a lot of hip-hop artists such as Wu-Tang Clan, etc. (they were rumored to show up at the reception). Today the rain stopped just in time for the ceremony to still be held outside by the water. The groom produced a piece for the girls to walk to and also their grand entrance song. It is always nice to work for someone that really knows what they are talking about when it comes to music. Very casual fun group. The place cards were extremely fun with little San Diego style items glued on each card. They had a cool digital guest sign in book with a “photo booth” option for later in the afternoon provided by Picture This. The ice cream bar was an absolute favorite with guests. Who wants cake when you can make your own sundae!

I was back at the Rancho Bernardo Inn tonight in the Aragon Ballroom. The ceremony was directly outside on the lawn. One of the most unique things I have ever seen at a wedding happened tonight. The bride had this surprise planned for the groom but didn’t tell anyone. She got on the microphone and explained how her new husband basically devotes his entire life to serving others and she wanted to do something special for him. She took him out to the middle of the dance floor before dinner and had him sit down. The staff brought out a metal tub with towels. She then washed his feet as a way of honoring him. It was a silent and touching moment for all (see picture below). It was a conservative and fairly mellow group tonight (which the bride and groom expected) yet they still enjoyed the evening with some dancing. The enormous chocolate fountain (with milk to wash it all down) was a hit! I provided a few different lighting options tonight which really enhanced the atmosphere of the room. The bride and groom explained to me that the wall where their sweetheart table was placed looked really blank and not very attractive so I suggested we project their monogram up above their table along with uplighting throughout the room. You can see the before and after pictures below.

Another amazing group tonight! You know you are at a great place when you pull up to the Grande Colonial in La Jolla and there are two Ferrari’s and a Lamborghini sitting out front. It was a smaller group of about 80 people. The Grande Colonial is an excellent place for this size of group because they have different areas to create interest. Cocktail hour and dinner were held outside on the balcony and patio area. Dancing moved inside later on. The bride and groom were very specific with their music requests. It was probably some of the most unique and unusual music I have ever played at a wedding. I wasn’t too sure how all of this music would play out at the event since many of the artists and songs were most likely unfamiliar to their guests (Sound Tribe Sector 9, Pnuma Trio, Nosaj Thing, etc.). I was pleasantly surprised because it really worked well for their group. Everyone had an open mind and enjoyed it (they didn’t have to hear the ultra cliche’ songs in order to dance which is normally difficult for Americans). Highlights included: refreshing/unique music with an electronic twist, I spotlighted the cake which really made it stand out once the sun went down (see photo above), the water effect lighting added some movement and color to the dance floor area, the bride had on a pair of excellent Christian Louboutin heels that the photographer Cary Pennington kept trying to sneak shots of, the coordinators from Red Letter Days helped keep the evening (and guests) on track! Excellent wedding!

Tonight’s wedding at the Rancho Bernardo Inn was one of the best in a while. The ceremony began down on the Aragon Lawn and then the reception moved back up to the Bernardo Ballroom. It is always nice to play for a larger group of about 200 people after a few smaller events. Interesting details included the custom koozies for everyone and the pink dotted cake. Dance floor was packed from start to finish. They went crazy tonight! We even had a guy jump up on the head table and start dancing, as well as, encouraging everyone to go nuts… I am sure the staff was thrilled.

The ceremony was held at the Marston House in Balboa Park. We almost didn’t have any music or microphones for the ceremony because they “forgot” to make sure the electricity would be turned on. Luckily we found one outlet about 500 feet away and had to use an enormous amount of extension cords to reach the distance. It all worked out just a few minutes before start time… We then moved over to Marina Village in the Seaside Room for the reception. Cool group with a decent amount of dancing tonight. A few highlights included: The chocolate cake (looked interesting and a little different from the standard cakes I see at most weddings). They also included a mini cake on each table for guests. The bride and groom wanted to “hide” a few things about the room and the water effect lighting really transformed the ceiling and added some color.

It is always exciting when you do something new. This is the first time I have ever done a “surprise wedding”. All of the guests thought they were going to a nice Valentine’s Day lunch with family and friends at the Sheraton Harbor Island. Little did they know it was actually a wedding! It was great to see people’s faces when the bride walked out in her dress. Everyone was thrilled (because they had been together so long) but their jaws literally hit the floor. A truly nice touch was when the brides mother realized that the groom was wearing her husband’s tuxedo (he passed away a few years ago) that he got married in many years back. It fit without having any alterations to it! The ceremony was outside on the deck of their amazing top floor suite. Reception was held downstairs in the Shutters Room. No dancing was expected but they actually got down for a small group. It was a pleasure to work with Jerry Bryant again who performed the ceremony.

I had my last wedding of 2008 tonight at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. The rest of the year I have company parties and holiday events. The ceremony was held on the Fairway Pavilion Garden which is an amazing spot overlooking the golf course. They had long hour and a half for cocktails while the bride & groom went to the beach for photos. Once they returned we then moved into the ballroom for the reception. The food was excellent and the crowd was great. There was a photo booth/screen out in the hallway (provided by Kevin Roche Photography) that enticed many guests out to take part in the fun. They were a solid dancing group and we ended on a great note. Kevin Roche Photography did an excellent job capturing the photographic moments throughout the night. It was great to catch up with him and work together on such a great wedding.

I was back at The Thursday Club in Point Loma tonight for the ceremony and reception. Perfect weather for a late November wedding. Their theme was all about the beach so the room looked great with the water effect lighting on the ceiling! I also enhanced the square cupcakes with some spotlighting which made them really stand out up on the stage. After dinner I used the projection equipment to show a nice slideshow of the couple throughout the years (guests usually love seeing these as long as they are not too long). We had a pretty strong dancing crowd early on for a Sunday night wedding.

November is a perfect time of year for a wedding in Temecula. Tonight I was over at the South Coast Winery which has beautiful grounds and a wonderful spa. The couple had a traditional Scottish ceremony out by the vineyards with a bagpiper. The reception then moved inside where they had some Scottish dancing to kick it off followed by more of a club type atmosphere later in the evening. The group had a good time and the lighting added quite a bit to the tan room. You can see a few examples of the room with and without lighting below.
