Another great seven hour wedding down at the Omni Hotel San Diego tonight! We started off with the ceremony on the outdoor Palm Terrace at 5:00pm which is tented for the winter to keep out the cold. Guests moved down to the foyer for cocktail hour from 5:30 until 7:00pm. The ballroom doors opened and we kicked things off with their first dance followed by a few nice toasts. I provided a second microphone for a translator since the bride’s family was from Brazil and her dad only spoke Portuguese. Dinner was then served from 7:30pm until about 9:00pm. The rest of the evening was open for dancing and fun. After about 30-45 minutes of dancing we completed a few last events which included the cake cutting and bouquet toss. At about 10:00pm the bride and groom broke out with a large box of Brazilian Carnival themed party favors that included hats, glasses, and feather boas. I am usually not a big fan of these sort of “props” but this was done in a really fun way and the guests actually loved it. I don’t think it hurt that I played some Brazilian music to enhance the effect. We closed out the night with some great dance music and ended with their last dance at 11:30pm. They demanded “one more song” so I played one last Brazilian song to really close it out. This was a really fun carefree group.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and this weekend’s wedding was at the Grand Tradition Estate in Fallbrook. They have two locations at this site: the outdoor covered Arbor Terrace and the Beverly Mansion. Grand Tradition takes care of the music and microphones for the ceremony so I was inside the mansion tonight providing the reception DJ entertainment. This wedding was originally scheduled for late May but the groom received new orders that he was going to have to head over to Iraq early so they bumped the wedding up to February. Everyone was in a great mood and looking forward to the celebration despite these new orders. The ceremony was held outside by the lake. Guests moved into the mansion for the reception. I always think centerpieces that incorporate branches and candles that give the table some height look great. They went well with the room. The reception and events went extremely well.  One nice element was a special dedication to the bride’s parents. As a surprise I played their first dance song since they were celebrating their 30th anniversary. The cake looked tasty and I heard a few people commenting on how they could actually smell the chocolate from a distance. Dancing was consistent the entire evening and picked up as the evening went on. We ending with their last dance: Let’s Get It On – Marvin Gaye  which always creates a little laughter…

Today I headed down to the Sheraton Harbor Island near the San Diego airport to provide ceremony and reception DJ services for William and Brenda’s wedding. The weather has been really crazy lately and it was scheduled to rain all day. Our couple decided to move the ceremony inside to be on the safe side. We held the ceremony in one room, guests then moved to the foyer for the cocktail hour (they opted not to use the outdoor patio since it was raining), and later were invited into the Catalina Ballroom for the reception. The room looked good with matching linens and chair covers. The centerpieces added some need interest and height. This was a slightly longer event than most (totaling 7 hours of DJ time) so I wasn’t sure how they were going to last. It wasn’t a crazy group but they danced and enjoyed the evening. It turned out to be a fun relaxed group that stayed until the very end. Jason Taylor from Taylor Films captured some excellent video throughout the evening. Here is a link to his site: San Diego Wedding Videographer. I will try to post a link to some video highlights when it becomes available…

This morning I was over at the Oceanview Room in Pt. Loma for an early Saturday wedding. I helped provide the ceremony music and microphones out on the grass at 10am with a beautiful view of the San Diego Bay. If you are at a park or location that requires you to pick up your flower petals from the ceremony to avoid a charge a great idea is to have a contest for all the kids at your wedding. We made an announcement after the ceremony that all the kids who helped pick up the petals and put them in the bag would get a prize. The bride had some prize bags with a few toys/gifts in them for the coordinator to hand out as they threw away their petals. Easiest and fastest way to get the job done (and keeps the kids busy)! You never know how a day wedding will turn out when it comes to dancing. Most go really well but every now and then you get a group that is just not in that same nighttime party mode and they just want to relax. This wedding was the best of both worlds. People loved the view and the sunshine but there was a fair amount of dancing throughout the afternoon.

Today I headed up to Orange County to a beautiful reception site called the Orange County Mining Co. with the ceremony being held at Orange County Heritage Museum. The view from the reception site was pretty amazing overlooking all of the city lights down below. They had one of the most unique custom cake top caricatures made that looked just like their online game versions. The two locations required me to arrive much earlier due to the fact that I had to set up the reception equipment first and then travel 20-30 minutes to the ceremony location to get equipment ready. This wedding was a referral from a bride and groom who had their wedding over two years ago. They trusted me to DJ again for their sister so I really wanted to do a great job. Everyone enjoyed the evening and dancing went pretty well. The bride had gotten sick a few days earlier so she wasn’t feeling well towards the end of the evening. They had to leave about 30 minutes early but we were able to get in all the important events and some extra time for dancing. It is always an honor and a pleasure to DJ for past clients and their families!

I was over at the Town & Country Resort for a Sunday wedding today. I provided sound for the outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour. We then moved inside the ballroom for the reception. It was funny because they also had an ice sculpture which you don’t see at every wedding (last night’s wedding had an ice sculpture martini luge). I added some colored lighting to the ice sculpture which really made it stand out from across the room. Dancing was fairly consistent throughout the evening considering it was a Sunday night wedding. The lighting looked amazing in the room and really enhanced the atmosphere. It can really hide certain elements and bring out items you want to highlight. Tonight was a perfect example of that. I provided a custom monogram that was projected down onto the dance floor and 7 uplights around the room.

The Marriott Downtown San Diego was the venue for tonight’s wedding. The Seaview Room is a unique room with many options for lighting! Tonight we had many uplights throughout the space. Three custom monogram projections were projected onto the walls. We had their names above the dance floor and then two other patterned images on the side walls to add some interest. Dancing went well for the entire evening and guests had a good time. We used the water effect lighting above the dance floor during open dancing for color and movement. A fun element was the ice martini luge where guests could select their custom flavored martini before it was chilled going down the ice luge. They also had a chocolate fountain with an assortment of fruits, brownies, rice krispies, and snacks to dip.

The Menu tonight looked amazing:
~Salad~
Mixed Field Greens Topped with Sliced Bartlet Pears, Candied Almonds and Crumbled Feta Cheese Served with Balsamic Vinaigrette
~Entree~
Petite Filet and Crab Stuffed Shrimp served with a Cabernet Reduction
Parmesan Mushroom Risotto
Patty Pan Squash, Asparagus, Baby Carrots, and Roasted Red Tomato with Bread Crumbs
Basket of Baked Breads to Include Mini Cheese Rolls and Cheese Sticks
~Dessert~
Chocolate Covered Strawberries, Starbucks Coffee, and Tea Service

I was back at L’Auberge Del Mar tonight for a great wedding. I projected the couple’s names onto the waterfall for a dramatic outdoor space. Guests kept taking pictures with it so it served a few different purposes. We packed the ballroom with 150 guests, a band, and myself as the DJ. We kicked dancing off 10 minutes into the reception before dinner was served. They had many guests from the east coast so they are used to a little dancing before dinner. It worked out well and the floor was packed. I mostly played Motown and Oldies at this point to keep it friendly for all. After dinner the band played for an hour, we cut the cake, and then I finished off the evening playing more of the current music mixed in with a little funk, 80’s, and 90’s. They kept wanting more. The groom wanted “Shout” as the last song and everyone went completely nuts.

Tonight I was up at the California Center For The Arts in Escondido. In the past 15 years I can’t remember DJing a wedding or event there. It is always refreshing to visit a new location. We started with cocktail hour outside on the patio where I provided a small cocktail portable music system. It was hot out so guests were ready to make there way inside once we opened up the ballroom doors. The cocktail hour and reception were a total of 7 hours on a Sunday night so I didn’t think guests would make it until the end.It did fade out around 10pm but people stayed until the end. I played a lot of country tonight (bride & groom’s requests) which is very different from most weddings. They enjoyed it and I think everyone had a good time. The uplighting I provided really put some needed color on the all white walls. The space would have felt really empty without them. We also use the white “starry” lights during their first dance only. They wanted to add a little something different to make it stand out.
